After the 2004 Joint Services Open House at Andrews Air Force Base I knew I needed to see the new F/A-22A Raptor again somewhere. The opportunity presented itself by way of Aviation Nation 2004 at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada. As if an excuse to visit Las Vegas was really necessary, the air show sealed the deal and there I was at the Aviation Nation flight line on Saturday, November 13, 2004. Though the Raptor is destined to be an air show favourite for the next decade or two, there’s nothing quite like seeing it in its earliest configuration.

The Aviation Nation show presented both a static and flying Raptor to woo the crowds. A great display resulted. My only complaint is that the weather was less than ideal, and when the sun was shining it was in front of the flying subjects all day making photography a challenge.

Here the landing gear is almost completely retracted and the jet exhaust is burning!

After a brief flypast the F/A-22 Raptor touches down at Nellis AFB.

As the Raptor sets down the tailplanes act as air brakes.  Note the extended flap on the leading edge of the wing.

The Raptor taxis past the other special aircraft at Aviation Nation 2004 – Nellis is the home of the USAF Thunderbirds.

The taxi path along the flight line yielded a great photo opportunity for profile shots of a rolling Raptor.

Yet another view as the Raptor rolls by.

As the F/A-22A passes by we get a look at the exhaust nozzles that provide vectored thrust capability.  These nozzles are hidden by red fabric covers when the Raptor is on static display.

The static raptor at Aviation Nation was fitted with Sidewinder missiles in the weapons bay on each side.

A different look at the weapons bay on the other side of the Raptor showing how the Sidewinder points out on a considerable angle for launch.

A close-up view of the Sidewinder missile housed in the side weapons station of the aircraft.

Probably details only of interest to modellers are the small covers placed over various items below the cockpit (these are on both sides of the aircraft).
