Although
this book was published 5 years ago, it has become one of the newest editions to my library. This book by Osprey Publishing
on the Tiger was an inspiration and a pleasure to read. The authors first give a brief history of the Tiger I including a
small talk on the Sturmtiger.
The first
model to be done is a Tiger I Ausf. E (Mid) of the 508th sPzAbt. The authors first begin with a brief history about
the unit including where they fought and which vehicles they switched to and how the end came for the unit. During active
service this unit destroyed over 100 enemy tanks.
The author
begins with a Tamiya 1/35 scale Tiger. They begin with a built model and discuss adding zimmerit to the model in all the proper
places and then begin to paint. A turned aluminum barrel, photo-etch and some resin have been added to the model to bring
out a better Tiger.
The next
Tiger to be discussed is a Tiger I Ausf. E (Late) of the 507th sPzAbt.
As with the last Tiger, the author begins with a brief history of the unit including telling that the unit destroyed over
252 enemy tanks and 80 tank destroyers and assault guns. This tank, #322 (Third Battalion, Second Company, Second Tank) has
had photo-etched and an aluminum barrel added to enhance the final build. The authors have included diagrams for extras added
that were not discussed anywhere else in this chapter. The Tiger that was completed was magnificent and shows me that I had
not yet begun to fight.
The next
entry is about the Sturmtiger. The next few pages talk about the history of the vehicle, the build in progress and the colour
scheme for the build itself.
Once
the vehicles have been built, the authors take us through a walk around of a Tiger I that is in Saumur Museum, France. Colour
side views are next, and then scale drawings, markings, references and model round-ups. I think that the authors have provided
a valuable service by writing this great book that will be on the shelves of any German armour builder for year to come. I
tip my hat to the authors, well done.
