Modelling Waffen-SS Figures
Osprey Modelling Series 23

Osprey Publishing has produced another solid modeling experience book, which will become undeniably the number one guidebook for figure modeling.

The figures that Calvin Tan models are as follows:

1. SS-Sturmmann, 1st SS-Panzer-Division “Liebstandarte Adolf Hitler”, Kursk, 1943

2. SS-Scharfuhrer, 1st SS-Panzer-Division “Liebstandarte Adolf Hitler”, Normandy, 1944

3. Grenadiers, 12th SS-Panzer-Division “Hitler Jugend”, Normandy 1944

4. Salvation:SS-Schutze, 3rd SS-Panzer-Division “Totenkopf”, Vienna, 1945

The author starts off to explain that he does not subscribe to the Nazi ideology or their political beliefs of that period but understands the fascination with SS lore and myths.

What started off as Hitler’s bodyguards ended up as 38 full divisions that helped terrorize Europe for 5 years.

Mr. Tan goes through many different techniques on how to modify figures to create the desired appearance of what you feel should be accurate. In this book, he shows how to achieve the camouflage effect on the uniforms. The following pictures from the book shows the way he paints the effect and the different patterns as well.

After seeing these patterns and how they were done it leaves one with the desired awe feeling and the feeling of that I can do it to. Calvin Tan has not only done an excellent job showing how to paint the figure but also how to sculpt your first figure. This book is meant for the figure modeler that has being struggling on how to move to the next level. My hat goes of to Mr. Tan for his great work.
