The big German cats (Panthers and Tigers) have prominent vents in their engine decks which usually show a vast cavern inside
most models. As an easier alternative to putting a complete engine in a kit, several aftermarket manufacturers have
released resin inserts for Panther and Tiger kits to show some of the radiator and cooling fan detail that lies underneath
these grilles. While on a recent trip to Mission Models in Los Angeles, I picked up Artisan Mori's effort at replicating
this detail. This is my first experience with products from this small Japanese manufacturer, and I must say that I
am impressed. The two pieces included are beautifully and flawlessly casted, with exquisite detail and an excellent
representation of depth. There is a well-defined casting block underneath each piece which, once removed, allows the
pieces to slip snugly in between the sponsons and the engine deck for a precise fit. There are no instructions included
in the kit beyond a photo of a Panther engine deck with the grilles removed, but installing these pieces is not exactly brain
surgery.
I'm looking forward to adding these pieces to my DML Panther D once it's painted (the beauty of this is that I can add
the inserts after the hull is assembled and painted, thereby avoiding any potentially challenging masking). Although
perhaps a bit pricey, I highly recommend these as a great addition to a DML Panther kit.
