1/35 Scale

Kit # 35036

1 Figure (3 pieces), resin

Price approximately $12.95 CDN

This figure is one of a number of superbly sculpted figures and head sets from Ultracast, one of Canada's great aftermarket success stories.  To date, I believe this is the only American figure that has been released by Ultracast (more is the pity), although they have done a GI head set wearing the standard M1 helmet.  If you have never purchased an Ultracast product before, indulge yourself.  The casting quality on all of their products, whether figures, armour accessories, or aircraft parts (primarily exhausts and seats with seatbelts), is simply amazing.  This figure has only three parts: the head and left hand are moulded separately, but the rest of the figure is an amazing single piece casting.  Kevin McLaughlin, Ultracast's owner, sculpted this piece.

This particular figure is wearing standard US Army tanker's garb for the Northwest Europe and Italian campaign period: the leather tanker's helmet, the standard Armored Force jacket, and the "bib" overalls covering herringbone twill overalls.  He is casually posed  sitting on top of a tank turret, with one foot resting on top of the turret and his left arm on his knee.  While quite suitable for a Sherman or Pershing turret (some reshaping of the buttocks may be necessary for a good fit onto the vehicle), mine is going in a Panther cupola, posing for a "Hero shot" for the folks back home.  No insignia is visible on the uniform, nor is a sidearm present.  While not really dressed appropriately for, say, the Ardennes, the uniform combination would work well for a diorama set in the fall of 1944 or the spring of 1945.

As I have repeatedly said, the casting is superb.  The attachment points for the head and hand on the casting plug are dainty, yet sufficiently strong to hold the pieces on, while the body has only minimal cleanup (mostly on the figure's posterior, where it will not be visible anyways, and where work will probably have to be done regardless in order to insure a good interface with whatever vehicle he will be sitting on).  No air bubbles are present, nor are there any seams or flash on the figure.

My biggest complaint about this figure is that he has no companions.  I wish Ultracast would do more American tanker figures (perhaps like the lovely three-figure sets that they have released of British Commonwealth crews), as well as a set of heads with the American tanker's helmets on them.  Those alone would go a long way towards dressing up some of the injection-moulded figures out there now.

This figure is highly recommended, and is excellent value for the money.  Go buy one!  Perhaps that will convince Kevin to make more of them.
