November 2006

Meeting Minutes:

1.) The first item on the agenda was, as last month, the location for the meetings in 2007. As per the mandate given by the membership, the gymnasium at the Kiwanis Seniors' Center was reserved for all of next year.

However, in order to support this move, the dues will be increased fro to $35 next year. This increase more or less covers the increase in cost, which is considerable. (Currently, the room rental for one night is about $45. The rental fee for the new room is about $77 per night.)

It should be noted that there has NOT been a change in time or day-of-the-week for the 2007 meetings. They will still be the second Wednesday of the month from 7:00 until 9:00 pm at the Seniors' Center.

The membership did not present any concerns with this increase. The extra space that the new room will provide will be much welcomed, especially during our breaks and on Swap Meet night, when wandering about is de rigueur .

In addition, the extra room will be welcomed because we had a number of new people come our to our meeting this month. We hope that they will continue to come and be part of our club, since we'll have room for them now!

There is, however, a small glitch in the master plan. The gymnasium is not currently available to us in February, April or May. On those nights, we are currently scheduled to meet in our current room, the Conference Room. Arrangements are being made, however, to rectify this situation. Keep your fingers crossed.

2.) The preparations for the London Scale Model Show in 2007 continue apace. The domain name www.londonscalemodelshow.ca has been officially registered (Go and check it out!), and the Carling Heights center has been reserved. Thus we have a space in both the real world and cyberspace!

Also, the categories have been finalized, and awards design has been completed. Yes, fans, there will actually be REAL AWARDS , not just ribbons, at our show! There will be some kind of medallion for 1 st , 2 nd and 3 rd place finishers. There are also special theme awards. Keep tuned to the website listed above for more details.

All club members are encouraged to ensure that the model show-attending public is aware of the awards. We know this has been a failing of our last show, but we're going to learn from experience and not repeat our mistakes!

3.) Shirts came in this month as well, and there were, quite surprisingly, no clerical errors made on anyone's part! Nearly everyone got their shirts. Notable exceptions are:

Rob Essary

Tom Drysdale

Harald Sydness (off choppering somewhere, no doubt!)

It should also be noted that these individuals have not yet paid either, so if they bring their money to the next meeting, they can get their shirts at the same time!

4.) Christmas is coming! That means it's time for our annual Model Jeopardy night and pizza dinner. This year, the event is not in the usual church basement. THIS YEAR'S PARTY IS AT THE KIWANIS SENIORS' CENTER!! In other words, same Bat Time, same Bat Place!!

The idea for this year is that we will make a meal of it. There should be enough pizza for everyone. An email asking about dietary considerations and attendance will be going out in the coming weeks. Please RSVP when you get it! Pop and Pizza will be provided by the club, but if anyone has desserts or chips they want to bring out, it would be greatly appreciated!

6.) As always, there was an excellent show-and tell table. The number of models on the table this month was lower than usual, but the variety was as startling as ever. We had everything from WW I planes to modern jets, tanks from WWII to present, a Custom Van (Insane hand painting!!!!) and some modelling products.

Our monthly seminar series this time was on modelling German Armour, with a particular focus on Zimmerit anti-magnetic mine coating. Ed Kubiak gave us a very interesting presentation on the history and current state of German Armour models, as well as a good look at Zimmerit - both in real life and at the modelling level. Next Time:

Next Time: It's Pizza/Jeopardy night! Bring your brain and your appetite!

See you then!
