August 2006
1.) The first item this month was shirts. As discussed last month, the club will provide a T-shirt (or equivalent money towards a golf shirt) to all club members who are fully paid. The list was once again deployed, and additional signers were able to put down their size, colour choice and type of shirt.
Next meeting, Bobby will take the list with him to the shirt maker in order to get our order underway. Please be sure to sign the order form by then, or to email the president (agrehorn@uwo.ca) to be added to the list. Anyone not on the list by the time it goes with Bobby may be out of luck.
Actually ordering the shirts was put off until next month so that Bobby could get the order sheet with the maximum number of signatures on it.
2.) The second order of business was the loss of the church room for the informal Wednesday night get together. The last day that we can have it is August 31, 2006. This also apparently affects the Model Jeopardy night, and a new location will have to be found for that. Ed Kubiak mentioned several places out to which he had feelers, but also said he’d keep working.
The basement of Neo Tokyo (an anime store on Dundas just east of Adelaide) was also suggested, but it was noted it was small, so only a limited number could attend.
3.) The big item on the agenda was the show. Due to personal circumstances, both Dave Guertin and Anthony Goodman made it known they would not be able to chair/co-chair the show. Thankfully, Scott Taylor and Paul Bird stepped bravely and readily into the breach.
Scott and Paul had already assembled a very impressive list of ideas, goals and concepts for a show in 2007. Thankfully, with a little prodding, a number of other IPMS London members also volunteered for the show committee. Cam Hastings, Mario Morello, Stuart Clark and Doug Booth all agreed to help out. In an after meeting pow-wow, Aaron Propper also agreed to help the committee out.
With such a great group, I’m sure we’ll have an excellent show!
HOWEVER, it should be noted here and now that EVERY MEMBER will need to contribute to the show if we want it to be a success. We had a great show last time – let’s do it again!
Details on the show will be rolled out as they are finalized. Keep watching the website for more info!
4.) Three new shows were brought to the attention of everyone at this meeting. The first two are automotive shows (thanks, Mario!):
Megacity Motor Madness is on September 24, 2006, somewhere in Toronto. Go to www.group25.org for details.
The N.N.L Nationals #27 are being held in Toledo, Ohio, on October 7, 2006. They are in the Lucas County Recreation Center. I believe this is a Sunday. The previous day there is a toy and collector’s show, although this is separate admission.
COMS (the Central Ontario Model Show) is being held Sunday, April 27, 2007. This event is at CFB Borden, in the Juno Beach Warrant Sgt’s Mess. For information, email coms@vianet.com.
5.) A good show-and tell table with a variety of both built and unbuilt kits was presented, although it was a bit smaller due to our lower turnout (an August thing, I’m told…). There was the usual mix of everything from ships, to sci-fi, and resin to injection moulded stuff.
6.) Our monthly seminar series continued with Cam Hastings, Mario Morello and Lee Rehorn teaming up to tell us about the wide world of car modelling. Apparently, car modellers are the largest segment of the modelling world, and account for most ‘casual’ modelers. We learned about ‘out of box’ work, customizing and even working with die cast cars as a starting point!
Next Time:
Our monthly seminars will continue with a presentation on aircraft modeling, and the show committee will fill us in on whatever progress they’ve made up to then. Of course, we’ll also have our usual show-and-tell, 50/50 and post-meeting meeting at Kelsey’s!
See you then!
